Walking around Matsumoto Castle Park as a core of the city, we investigate the historic and geographic circumstance of the castle and the city. In ancient age, the capital of Shinano country was placed at a village of Matsumoto (Fukashi). Leading lords were competiting for dominating it in the war age.

Walking in the park and around the moats, we investigate the grand deffence-design of the castle and its down-town formation. In Japanese it was called Nawabari. The central zone of the city has abundant greenbelts and waters, because the city has conserved the Nawabari-concept of the castle-towns. What was it ?

Let's walk around in Ni-no-maru, i.e. the second site, to investigate the design-concept of it. The palace
of Ninomaru which was used for the main prefecture-office was burnt out in Meiji period. The site is now a open lawn-yard.
But there recently Taiko-mon, i.e. the drum-turret gate, was rebuilt. A great gate....What a magnificent view !

Daimyo means a clan-lord. The main streat from Otemon site to the castle is Daimyo-Cho street. Once it was a road of Samurai-oficers to come up to the castle. The symbol of the town where a lot of old shops and big corporations are standing side by side is Shinanoki-avenue.

Let's visit Nawate Dori, a street from Chitose-bashi bridge to Hitotsu-bashi. There you would enjoy looking around the rows of small shop-houses looking like an old temple-town.

Warehouses of white mud-walls with corrugated walls and dark-tile rooves are standing side by side along Nakamachi Dori street. How nice to watch the stylish townscape of classy-traditional warehouses !
The street as a whole looks like a thema-park. It is a very beautiful and uniquest town in Matsumoto City.

Trip on Highlands in Matsumoto

Ushibuse-gawa river runs down on a very fragile soil valley of Hachibuse mountain. Over 100 years ago they constructed a French style stair-stream covered with the stone-works to avoid a disasterous flood involving rocks and mud.
The beautiful landscape of the valley tells us a history of hard work of the humankind to soothe a fury of the nature.

On the ridge-back bank over Ushibuse-Valley stands Gofukuji, an old temple founded in Nara period. It has a huge main hall, Nyoirin-do, and Kannon-do, moreover many Buddha-statues as cultural assets.
