Article in English From Kamimachi to Nakamachi

At the corner beneath Kotokuji stands a house of information service.
Walking up the road beseide the house, we find the site of ex-Tsumago elementary school on a mountain-hill. There are some old wooden school houses.
The site is standing on the hill higher than the one where Kotokuji is standing. Then we can get a wide-opend view over the town.
In front of the information service across the street is standing the Post Musenm which displays historic materials about Japanese post-system.

Main rows of houses along Kaido-street which is going up for about 300 meters until a small water mill-house and the official bulletin-bord.
Tsumago-Honjin and Waki-Honjin, i.e. the main office and the side-office, are standing midway. Waki-Honjin is now the town's museum of history and folklore.
The chief of Honjin was a patrimonial position which was assigned to the Shimazakis family. Mother of Shimazaki Tosona, a great master-writer, was born in the family.
In Toson's novel "Yoakemae" the family and Waki-honjin appear many times as one of the main stages.

  光徳寺の下の道沿いには妻籠を愛する会事務所があります。
  その脇の小径を登っていくと、旧妻籠小中学校跡に行き着きます。木造の懐かしい風情の校舎です。
  旧小学校は、光徳寺よりも高い位置にあ ります。だから、妻籠の街全体を展望するなら、ここまで来た方がいいでしょう。

  では、観光案内所まで下りて、そこから北に進むことにしましょう。
  目の前に郵便局（郵便史料館）があります【写真下：妻籠局のポスト】。

  主要な街並みは、ここから水車小屋と高札場のあたりまで、およそ300メートルほど続きます。ずっと上り坂です。
  道の両側に並ぶ家並みを楽しみながら進みましょう。
  この街並みの中ほどに妻籠宿本陣と脇本陣奥谷があります。今では、脇本陣を中心に南木曽町博物館になっています。
  本陣跡は街道の東（右手）にあります。
  妻籠宿ふれあい館（無料休憩所）も併設されています。ここで、自前の弁当を食べるのもいいいでしょう。

  明治にいたるまで、宿駅の役職としての本陣には島崎家が世襲で任命されていて、庄屋も兼ねていました。この本陣は、文学者、島崎藤村の母の生家で、藤村の次兄が養子に来て後継ぎになったそうです。
  藤村の「夜明け前」は馬籠が主要な舞台ですが、妻籠も何度も登場します。
